Interactive Case Study
This is a demonstration of a case-study for self-directed learning using a decision
tree, instead of a multi-person discussion. The case features a focal problem to
be resolved by the participant. After reading the case, the participant must choose
among an initial range of options. The consequences of choosing that option are
then presented, followed by additional options, etc... Depending upon the path taken
through the decision tree, the ultimate result can be a best outcome, a feasible
but suboptimal outcome, or an outcome that is unacceptable. If one of the latter
two occurs then the participant is invited to try new paths until the optimal solution
is found. Then a multi-media clip can discuss the general principles addressed by
the case and reinforce the learning.
Interactive Case Studies are a valuable addition to online course features that
can dynamically supplement multi-media lectures and discussions.
